About the Song

Eye Of The Tiger is a classic 80’s song written in 1982 by Frankie Sullivan and Jim Peterik, performed by Survivor. It was specifically written for the movie Rocky III upon request of Sylvester Stallone. Stallone told the writers he wanted a good boxing song and he sure got what he asked for! There was a scene in the movie where the writers of the movie wanted to use Another One Bites The Dust by Queen, but they were unable to secure the rights for it which is one of the reasons Eye Of The Tiger was written. Survivor was a band formed in 1978 but did not achieve the greater heights of their popularity until the same year Eye Of The Tiger was released. They did a wonderful job performing it and the song ended up being a bigger hit than they imagined. The lyrics are interesting and captures the heart of Rocky Balboa’s character amazingly well.

SurvivorEye Of The Tiger Lyrics

Risin’ up, back on the street
Did my time, took my chances
Went the distance, now I’m back on my feet
Just a man and his will to survive

So many times, it happens too fast
You change your passion for glory
Don’t lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive

It’s the, eye of the tiger, it’s the thrill of the fight
Risin’ up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he’s watchin’ us all with the eye of the tiger…

Face to face, out in the heat
Hangin’ tough, stayin’ hungry
They stack the odds still we take to the street
For the kill with the skill to survive

It’s the eye of the tiger, it’s the thrill of the fight
Risin’ up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he’s watchin’ us all with the eye of the tiger…

Risin’ up, straight to the top
Had the guts, got the glory
Went the distance, now I’m not gonna stop
Just a man and his will to survive

It’s the, eye of the tiger, it’s the thrill of the fight
Risin’ up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he’s watchin’ us all with the eye of the tiger…

The eye of the tiger…
The eye of the tiger…
The eye of the tiger…
The eye of the tiger…

The Lyrics

The first verse talks about rising up, defeat and getting back up when your down, and emphasizes the power of a man’s will. This captures the atmosphere of the movie perfectly right off the bad. The drum beat and the guitar riff at the beginning also do an excellent job of setting the mood early. The second verse talks about losing your passion, the importance of not giving up on your dreams, and how you have to fight if you want to have any hope of realizing your dream. The writers of this song certainly knew the script of the movie very well, it would be practically impossible for them to do such a good job if they had not immersed themselves in the story. The chorus is a very catchy tune and is the kind of music that you will keep thinking about long after you hear the song.

The first line of the course “It’s the eye of the tiger, it’s the thrill of the fight, rising up to the challenge of our rival” captures the mood that Rocky Balboa invokes and takes to the ring with him in his final fight. The song is all about struggle, facing challenges, and rising to the top to experience the glory. Eye Of The Tiger was such a big success that it ended up topping the Billboard Top 100 chart for 6 weeks and was also number one for the Cash Box Top 100 singles and eventually went platinum. Eye Of The Tiger even made #21 in Billboards top 100 songs of all time. Even if you aren’t into boxing and are not interested in the Rocky movies, this is still a great song if that 80’s sound is your kind of music.
